The Best Places to Ride Horseback on Hilton Head

Horseback riding is not exclusive to equestrians! As Winston Churchill once famously said, "No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle." Whether it is riding alongside the beach or down a nature trail, there are many great ways to experience horseback riding for the first time! Make sure to follow any instructions that the stable provides, but most importantly, have a good time!

Driftwood Stables

The only USHJA Recognized Riding Academy in South Carolina, Driftwood Stables are one of the most distinguished stables in the southeast. Driftwood Stables offers horse lessons through their Seasonal Day Camps, but by appointment only. They do not provide tours of the Lowcountry, but if you want your child to have the day of a lifetime, Driftwood Stables are a great shout for you!

Moss Creek Equestrian Center

Moss Creek Stables offers lessons and horse boarding at their equestrian center. Found at the foot of the bridge to Hilton Head Island, Moss Creek is nestled in a peaceful community. They do not do tours, but they are another great place to learn horseback riding in a safe and secure environment for all ages!

Daufuskie Trail Rides

While Daufuskie Trail Rides is not located on Hilton Head Islands, but it is a quick trip across the water via taxi or ferry. The only Sea Island where horseback riding on the beach is allowed, Daufuskie Trail Rides is the perfect place to experience the magic of seeing the ocean from a saddle. The 5,000-acre historic community only sports 400 residents and offers historical and wooded trail rides.

Lawton Stables

Found in the Sea Pines Preserve, Lawton Stables offers trail rides, boarding, and lessons on the 600-acres of forest found on Hilton Head. Lawton Stables is home to an animal farm with goats, miniature donkeys, alpacas, and pot-bellied pigs that you can feed for a quarter per handful!

In addition to their one-hour guided western-style trail rides, you can also rent a Shetland Pony ride for small children seven years old or younger. Pony rides are two laps around the aforementioned animal farm led by a team member and make for an excellent experience for your small children!
