Where Lowcountry Traditions Become Legendary Experiences

Every April, more than one hundred thousand plaid-clad golf fans arrive in Hilton Head for one of the most spectacular PGA tournaments in the country, the RBC Heritage. A staple event in Hilton Head for more than 50 years, this week-long tournament brings together the best in the sport as they hit the links in pursuit of the coveted tartan jacket, trophy, and their portion of the $20 million purse.

A Hilton Head Tradition Since 1969

When Harbour Town Golf Links was first created, Hilton Head was little more than a map dot along a coastline brimming with popular destinations like Savannah and Charleston. That’s why the idea of a professional tournament held on a holiday weekend seemed so far-fetched. However, once golf greats like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus signed on to compete, things really took off.

Course designer Pete Dye created a course that would become immortalized in golf history as one of the most special places to play, and thanks to the tournament’s undeniable success, Hilton Head Island is now synonymous with incredible golf.

Harbour Town Golf Links

Located at Sea Pines Resort, Harbour Town Golf Links is known for narrow fairways, strategic hazard placement, and the need for eagle-eye precision over powerful swings. Designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus, it’s a championship course set along the picturesque Calibogue Sound, which adds to the challenge, forcing players to calculate wind in addition to myriad other obstacles.

Course Stats:

  • Par 71
  • Signature Hole: 18th, where wind from the sound often poses a particular challenge on the 472-yard, Par-4 shot
  • Yardage: ~7,200
  • Course Rating: ~75.6

How to Experience the Tournament

The best viewing spots along the course are:

  • 10th Fairway – See shots on the 10th as well as shots approaching the 15th, and second shots onto the 16th.
  • Between the 17th Green and 18th Tee – The popularity of the final hole means viewing can be tough, but finding a sweet spot between 17 and 18 lets you enjoy the big finale with slightly fewer crowds.
  • 9th Tee – Great spot for watching long drives
  • 2nd and 6th Greens and 7th Hole – If you want proximity to food, bathrooms, and rest spots while you watch, this is your sweet spot
  • 18th Green – Snap the iconic shot of the lighthouse as you watch the final shots
