What Is Gullah Geechee Culture?

The Gullah Geechee people descend from Africa, and their unique culture developed as a result of being enslaved on island and coastal plantations in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The overall influence of Gullah Geechee culture abounds throughout the region in everything from language, art, music, crafts, food, and spiritual expressions. The Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration seeks to honor all of these things in an attempt to educate and share these deep roots that exist in the Lowcountry.
