8 of the Best Day Trips from Hilton Head Island

1. Savannah, GA

Distance: 31.5 miles | Travel Time: 45 minutes

History buffs, beer enthusiasts, and foodies alike will fall in love with Savannah! T Stroll through the Bonaventure Cemetery. Peruse exhibits at the SCAD Museum of Art. And find a beach read at The Book Lady Bookstore. This beautiful historic city offers visitors an exciting array of activities for everyone to enjoy!

Travel Tip: Celebrate all things seafood, soul, and wine at the Savannah Food and Wine Festival in the fall. 


2. Bluffton, SC 

Distance: 7.6 miles | Travel Time: 10 minutes

If you’re looking for a quiet destination, then you’ll love Bluffton. Escape the hustle and bustle and find peace in Bluffton’s quaint Southern charm. Spend some time with Mother Nature and explore outdoor attractions such as Pinckney Island National Refuge and Victoria Bluff Heritage Preserve/Wildlife Management Area

Travel Tip: Attend one of Bluffton’s annual events, such as the Bluffton Oktoberfest, the Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival, and the Bluffton Beer Festival


3. Daufuskie Island 

Travel Time: 1 hour via ferry 

Leave your phones behind and step back into simpler times when you visit Daufuskie Island! There is no bridge connecting the island to the mainland, nor are there more than a few paved roads on the island. You can expect to see ancient oak trees draped in Spanish moss, white-sand beaches, and historic landmarks. 

Travel Tip: To get to Daufuskie Island, you will need to take the ferry! It’s a lovely trip over the water with beautiful views. While you’re there, eat at some of the best restaurants


4. Tybee Island 

Distance: 48.8 miles | Travel Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Tybee Island is a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. Consider going sea kayaking, birdwatching, and beach biking for a bit of adventure during your visit. You might also enjoy climbing Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse: The Tybee Island Light State, which dates back to 1736. To finish off your day, grab an ice cream cone at the Sugar Shack.

5. Beaufort, SC, and Nearby Sea Islands 

Distance: 34.5 miles | Travel Time: 50 minutes

Sweet tea, saltwater, and savory seafood await in Beaufort and the surrounding Sea Islands! Slow down and take in your surroundings. Watch as sailboats gently float by in the distance. Listen to the sound of birds singing as the trees sway in the breeze. There’s so much beauty to be discovered in Beaufort. It’s up to you to find it! 

Travel Tip: If you’re making the trip to Beaufort, consider exploring some of the nearby sea islands such as Parris, Hunting, and Fripp, St. Helena, Lady’s, and Port Royal! 


6. Charleston, SC 

Distance: 97.8 miles | Travel Time: 2 hours and 5 minutes

Sing to the tune of “Carolina in the Morning” as you explore the impressive streets of the Holy City. Charleston, SC, is known for its hospitality, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. A food lover’s dream, this city’s culinary scene will stop you in your tracks (so that you can grab more snacks, of course). 

Travel Tip: Make time to watch the sunset in Charleston while you’re there! Some of our favorite places to catch the sunset are Waterfront Park, Sullivan’s Island, and the Charleston City Marina. 


7. Edisto Beach, SC 

Distance: 96.6 miles | Travel Time: 2 hours 

Edisto Beach is the perfect place to slow your pace and take in the sense of serenity that the Lowcountry has to offer. You have to check out Botany Bay while you’re visiting Edisto Beach. You’ll see everything from swampy maritime forests to shell-lined skeleton trees on the shoreline. Just remember that you can’t collect seashells from Botany Bay. 

Travel Tip: If you want to search for seashells to bring home as a souvenir, peruse the shores of Edisto Island State Park


8. St. Simon’s Island, GA 

Distance: 120 miles | Travel Time: 2 hours and 10 minutes

Historic landmarks, breathtaking beaches, and delicious food are just a handful of reasons to visit St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia. It’s the largest barrier island of the Golden Isles set in the Marshes of Glynn, and its selection of things to do will not disappoint. If you enjoy golfing, plan to check out one of the fabulous courses while you’re on the island! 

Travel Tip: Bring your dog along for some fun on St. Simon’s Island! There is plenty of hiking you can do with your pup here. You will also find some dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating as well.
